We have just finished sending out the invitations to this year's golf benefit that will be held at the Cassique Golf Course on Kiawah Island on Sunday September 19th. The benefit hopes to raise money for a family in the area that currently needs a home. Different sponsorships are described on the invitation for those interested in making a contribution to our cause while also entering into a fun and competitive tournament.
The tournament will feature a shotgun start and shamble format of play. For those who may be curious, a shotgun start is when groups of golfers tee-off simultaneously on different holes. With multiple groups playing at a time, the duration of the tournament can be kept to a reasonable length. As for the 'shamble format', this term refers to a type of play in which all of the golfers in a group tee-off on a hole (typically 2 or 4 people compose a group) and the best shot is taken as everyone's first stroke. So in other words, each of the golfers without the best tee-shot picks up their ball and proceeds with the normal, or 'stroke play', format of play from the location of the best tee-shot.
Aside from tournament prizes for the lowest group score, their will be contests offered with separate prizes such as a putting contest and a hole-in-one contest. The prize for the hole-in-one contest is $90,000!
The Cassique Golf Course is named after a Kiawah Indian chief and was designed by PGA legend Tom Watson. Some of you may have recently watched Watson play in the 2010 Masters as the oldest competitor at 60 years of age. His career is highlighted by 5 British Open titles, 2 Masters Titles, and 1 US Open title. His affinity for European style courses partially influenced his Cassique design. Half of the course is modeled after links courses characteristic of Scotland and Ireland, while the other half emphasizes typical lowland features, characteristic of our southern locale.
Be sure to check back in for tournament and contest results, and especially to find out more on the benefit's fundraising success!
