2 Cor. 8:7, “But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” Mr. George Miller exemplified this verse – he excelled in giving. He gave of his time as a volunteer, committee member, Board Member, Board President and he gave of his resources as a donor.
George was involved with several organizations and his work here with Sea Island Habitat is what we celebrate with this memorial House. So often, people don’t get recognized adequately during their lifetimes, but the families now living in our beautiful Habitat homes are a living tribute to George. This Volunteer House is an additional opportunity for our affiliate to use the motivation he brought to encourage future volunteers.
George not only changed the lives of many Lowcountry families, he also shaped us staff ...I know that even I was mentored by George in a small way. I only met him once, but he actively sent emails with ideas and suggestions for the fundraising committee that I’m a part of. I remember Chuck coming back to the office after lunches with George with pages of notes from him!
Many people will remember him as our Captain of the U.S.S. Habitat from the 2005 Annual Auction, welcoming ‘All Aboard!’ That call still rings out – we need everyone in our community and beyond to help the cause of affordable housing. The George Miller Volunteer House brings those from far away to the front lines…All Aboard!
