This past Martin Luther King Day marked a special day for SIHH and the Town of Hollywood as they worked together to build a community center for Hollywood residents. Volunteers on this year’s “Day On, Not a Day Off” project worked to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as they helped with digging the footer and completing a pre-build for the Hollywood center.
Since 2003, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity has continued to build on Dr. King’s dream by encouraging others to give back to their community in a meaningful way—by building a home for a hard-working, deserving family or by helping with other important community projects such as the 2010 Hollywood Community Center.
“To see the community come together for such a great cause is so rewarding,” says Anne Randall, Volunteer Coordinator for SIHH. “We have traditionally built a house for a family, but this year’s project has a much further reach as it will be benefitting the entire Hollywood community. We are so excited to be a part of this great initiative for Hollywood”
Located in Hollywood Manor Park, the 1,400 square foot community center will be the central building in a park which already offers several basketball courts, covered picnic areas and a playground to residents. Spearheading the project is Town of Hollywood Mayor Jacqueline Heyward who hopes to see the center develop into a place where people can gather, hold classes or meetings, and plan other activities to enhance the surrounding community.
The park is located within the Manor neighborhood at 6382 Barrun Street in Hollywood, SC. Dedicated staff, volunteers, and community members from SIHH and the Town of Hollywood worked together to begin building the center on the 18th and will continue to work on the center until it is completed in the beginning of March.
