More than 50 volunteers participated on Monday, January 17th for the 8th annual Sea Island Habitat for Humanity Martin Luther King Day Build. On this very special day volunteers honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by giving back to the community. The day started off with a ceremony where the volunteers heard from Greg Thomas (Executive Director for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity), Geona Johnson (Director of Housing and Community Development for the City of Charleston), and Reverend John Reynolds (former colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.).

Reverend John Reynolds worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for seven year’s in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The reverend applauded the volunteers for their commitment to service on this very special day. “Today we are doing something that Dr. King would be doing himself if he were here,” said Reverend Reynolds. “We are changing the lives of a family today.”

The volunteers started the day with two bare foundation, but by the end of the day the homes were framed thanks to the hard work of the volunteers. We are very grateful to Moe’s Southwest Grill for donating lunch to all our volunteers and for all of the hard work from the volunteers. The homes being framed at this year’s build are part of 10 Habitat homes that are being built in Joeva Cove.
